- Ask neighbours if they are affected.
- Never use outdoor heaters or stoves inside.
- Look at your consumer unit; a tripped switch means the fault is inside your property.
- Unplug computers and televisions so they are protected when the supply returns.
- On an isolated farm or rural lane, let a relative or friend know you are without power.
If several homes on your street are out, the cut should appear on the map, so follow updates there before ringing again. If the cut runs into the night, gather everyone in one room, close the curtains to hold the warmth, and keep a torch by the bed.

LESSONS FROM STORM ARWEN
In November 2021, Storm Arwen left around 112,000 homes in northern England without power, mostly in Northumberland, County Durham and Tyne and Wear. Northern Powergrid described it as the largest storm to hit its network since 2005, and large sections of overhead line had to be rebuilt. Power was not fully restored until 7 December.
Households may be eligible for the Priority Services Register for extra support.
