LIGHTS OUT IN YORKSHIRE?
Northern Powergrid maintains the grid from Sheffield to Scarborough. Its live power cut map lists current faults and restoration estimates, and 105 (free) takes your report. Keep the fridge shut, wrap up warm and use battery lamps.
First, make sure the fault is not inside your own home. A tripped switch on the consumer unit is the usual sign. When your neighbours have power and you do not, a qualified electrician is the right call. If the houses around you and the street lights are dark too, it is a network fault, and the map is the place to check for progress.
- Check on neighbours who may be vulnerable.
- Report fallen lines on 105 and stay well clear.
- Leave the freezer closed as well as the fridge.
- Unplug sensitive electrical equipment so it is not caught out when the supply returns.
- Put candles away; a torch is safer.

During Storm Babet in October 2023, around 40,000 Northern Powergrid customers lost power at some point, according to figures reported on 20 October. That figure covers Northern Powergrid’s whole area, which spans Yorkshire, the North East and northern Lincolnshire.
Households that depend on electricity for health reasons may be eligible for the Priority Services Register, which offers extra support during outages.
