If only your flat or house is dark, check the consumer unit first, as a tripped switch is often something you can reset yourself. When the whole street or block is out, the operator’s live map will show whether the fault is already known.
- Open the fridge and freezer only if you must.
- Switch off and unplug computers, TVs and chargers.
- Use a torch for light; candles are a fire risk in a dark flat.
- In blocks of flats, lifts and door entry systems may stop, so check on anyone who struggles with stairs.
When the lights come back, switch appliances on a few at a time, and check any medicines or food that need to stay cold.
