NO POWER IN NORFOLK, SUFFOLK OR CAMBRIDGESHIRE?

UK Power Networks runs most of the overhead lines and cables across the region. Open its live power cut map and enter your postcode to see faults and restoration estimates where available, or ring 105 (free). Keep a battery radio handy, avoid opening the freezer and leave one light switched on so you notice when supply returns.

On a farm or in a small village it can be hard to tell whether a cut is yours alone. Start with the consumer unit: a dropped switch means the problem is inside. If the switches are fine and the next house is dark too, look at the map before calling.

  • Write down any reference number the operator gives you.
  • Check on elderly neighbours first.
  • Unplug computers and other delicate kit so the surge on reconnection cannot harm it.
  • Light the house with torches, as candles are a fire risk in the dark.

Homes heated by storage heaters or heat pumps will cool down, so close internal doors and curtains to keep the warmth in.

KEEPING EAST ANGLIAN BUSINESSES TRADING

The region’s economy includes the Norwich Research Park, the Port of Felixstowe and Cambridge Science Park. Food producers, labs and freight operators here cannot afford hours without power. When the mains fails, cold rooms warm up, controlled lab conditions drift and container handling grinds to a halt. Packhouses and cold stores serving local farms face the same risk at harvest time. We supply emergency generator hire 24/7, install standby generators and carry out generator servicing and maintenance across all three counties. Our Norwich generator hire and Ipswich service page show how we can help, and keeping your business running through a power cut explains planning in more detail.

STORM DAMAGE ON THE EASTERN NETWORK

In February 2022, Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin hit in quick succession. UK Power Networks said nearly 14,000 properties in Suffolk lost power, and 679,700 homes and businesses were interrupted across its wider network. It called Eunice the largest storm in over a decade by number of faults. By the following Tuesday evening, power cuts were still affecting around 330 customers in Suffolk and more than 110 properties in Essex.

Households may be eligible for the Priority Services Register, which offers extra support during outages.

Can a storm leave rural Suffolk without power for days?
It has happened. After the February 2022 storms, some Suffolk customers were still off days later, so farms and rural sites should plan for it.
