CAMBRIDGE POWER OUTAGE: WHAT TO DO FIRST

UK Power Networks runs the grid here. Its live map lists faults, and 105 puts you through free. Treat any fallen wire as dangerous.

  • Check whether the street is dark or just your property.
  • Keep phones topped up.
  • If only your home is off, a tripped switch in the fuse box is the likely cause.
  • Unplug laptops, chargers and the TV so they are safe when the supply comes back.
  • Note the time the lights went out, in case food or equipment is damaged.

In shared houses and flats, agree who has a torch and who is watching the map, and keep the shared freezer closed. A dark stairwell is easy to fall on, so light it with a torch or phone and leave the candles in the drawer.

SCIENCE, HEALTH AND RESEARCH SITES

Cambridge Science Park, St John’s Innovation Centre, the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and Addenbrooke’s Hospital cannot afford interruptions to equipment or data. Lab freezers and controlled rooms have to stay within set conditions, so even a short cut can put samples and research at risk.

For a research group or tech firm, the questions to settle before a cut are simple: which freezers, incubators and servers must stay on, and for how long. Departments, start-ups and suppliers often share buildings, so agree in advance who decides what gets backup power. A generator can be sized to run a single cold room or a whole building. We offer 24/7 emergency generator hire when supply fails without warning, standby generators for sites that cannot risk a gap, and servicing to keep installed sets ready to run.
