Wales is served by two networks: National Grid Electricity Distribution in the south and SP Energy Networks in the north. Whichever side of the country you are on, 105 is free for reporting a cut. Businesses can arrange emergency generator hire 24/7.

STORMS THAT HIT WELSH SUPPLIES

After Storm Darragh in December 2024, around 11,000 homes in Wales were still without power on 10 December. In January 2025, Storm Eowyn brought widespread power cuts to Wales on 24 January, including to communities around Bethesda, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Menai Bridge and to Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital in Bangor. Storm Goretti added to the list in January 2026, with power lost to about 15,000 homes across Wales and the Midlands. Households who may be eligible can join the Priority Services Register with their network.

POWER CUT IN WALES? WHICH NETWORK DO YOU CALL?

Check the National Grid Electricity Distribution map for south Wales, or the SP Energy Networks map for north Wales. Not sure which side of the boundary you are on? Dialling 105 puts you through to the right operator for your address. Never touch fallen lines.

In a farmhouse or remote cottage, there may be no neighbours in sight to compare with. Start with the consumer unit: if a switch has dropped, the fault is inside your home. If every switch is on, check the map for your area. Homes with a private water pump may lose water as well as light, so keep bottled water and warm layers to hand, and reconnect appliances gradually once power returns.

  • Have your postcode ready when you call.
  • Check on elderly neighbours in rural areas.
  • Keep the freezer closed so food stays frozen.
  • Unplug computers and televisions until the supply is back.
  • Use torches for light and keep candles out of the way.

BUSINESSES AND PORTS ACROSS WALES

Operations around the ports of Milford Haven, Holyhead and Swansea, plus the hospitals and universities of the south Wales cities, depend on supply that never drops. When it does, cargo handling, ferry terminals, labs and lecture theatres can all be affected, along with the factories, farms and shops that serve them. We provide 24/7 emergency generator hire, standby generators and generator servicing and maintenance across Wales. Tell us which equipment must stay on and we can help size and site a generator for it, from a single farm building to a port operation. Our Cardiff generator hire team and our guide to how we keep your business running are the places to start.
