STORM ÉOWYN, JANUARY 2025

Storm Éowyn caused extensive damage to the Northern Ireland network. By 6am on 25 January 2025, about 189,000 homes and businesses were without power. NIE Networks counted well over 4,000 damaged locations and said reaching the last of them could take up to ten days. Customers who are older, disabled or rely on power for health reasons may be eligible to register with NIE Networks for extra support. Ask when you call.

POWER CUT IN NORTHERN IRELAND?

Call NIE Networks on 03457 643 643 to report a fault or damaged equipment, or look at the NIE Networks live power cut map. Please do not go near fallen lines, and stay clear of fallen trees, which can carry poles and wires down with them.

  • Check whether neighbours have power, which tells you if the fault is wider than your property.
  • Keep fridge doors shut.
  • If only your home is off, look for a tripped switch in the consumer unit before you ring.
  • Use torches instead of candles and keep spare batteries to hand.
  • Unplug sensitive equipment and chargers until the supply is steady.

If someone at home relies on powered medical equipment, follow their backup plan and get urgent help if needed. Keep a phone charged for updates from NIE Networks, and close curtains once it gets dark to keep the warmth in. Never run a portable generator indoors, in a garage or in a shed: the exhaust contains carbon monoxide, so keep it outside and away from doors and windows.

BUSINESS CONTINUITY ACROSS NORTHERN IRELAND

Belfast Harbour Estate is home to 760 businesses, and the Titanic Quarter houses technology companies. Sites like these cannot lose power for long. A cut stops lighting, communications and equipment in offices, logistics yards and labs alike, and at a harbour, gates, cranes and refrigerated containers all need a steady supply. Our 24/7 emergency generator hire covers a sudden loss of supply, and we also provide standby generators and generator servicing and maintenance for sites preparing for the next one.
