POWER CUT IN NORTHAMPTON: QUICK STEPS

See the checker below or the National Grid Electricity Distribution map for your postcode. If nothing shows, call 105, free in England. Stay back from any cable on the ground.

  • Check your fuse board before assuming it is a network fault.
  • Do not run a petrol generator indoors.
  • Look out at the street: dark houses and street lights mean a wider fault.
  • Unplug the TV, computer and router until the supply settles.

Keep the freezer closed, light the house with torches and keep a phone charged so you can check the map for updates. Older neighbours may appreciate a quick knock on the door.

If you are leaving the house, switch off the cooker, iron and heaters first so nothing comes back on while you are out. Write down when the supply failed, in case you need to claim for spoiled food.

NORTHAMPTON BUSINESS AND PUBLIC SITES

Industrial and housing estates were built at Lumbertubs, Moulton Park and Round Spinney as part of the 1968 New Town expansion, and the University of Northampton and Northampton General Hospital serve the town. Warehouses, labs and wards all depend on constant supply. For warehouses and workshops, a cut means stalled conveyors, missed dispatch slots and stock left waiting on the dock. We provide 24/7 emergency generator hire, and we install and maintain standby generators for firms that want backup ready before the next outage. Before you call, note what must run, how long for and where a generator could be placed safely, so we can match the set to your site. Our Northampton generator service covers standby power, and our guide shows how to keep your business running.

A SUBSTATION FIRE AND NORTHAMPTON’S NETWORK

On 15 April 2021, a fire at an electrical substation in Semilong cut power to properties in the NN1 and NN2 postcodes, with Western Power Distribution (now National Grid Electricity Distribution) aiming to restore supply by 11pm. One substation fault was enough to black out part of the town centre that night. If you have health needs or are of pension age, you may be eligible for the Priority Services Register.
