The city of Manchester is on the SP Electricity North West network. Check the live map for outages, or call 105 free to report a power cut. If your business is affected, we can arrange emergency generator hire 24/7.
On 6 August 2026 a power cut at 13:41 in Harpurhey hit more than 400 postcodes, including the site of Network Rail’s Manchester Rail Operating Centre. Network Rail said signalling was disrupted and trains across the North West were delayed or cancelled until engineers restored it late that day. A report the same day said Network Rail confirmed an emergency generator had failed to activate.
SP Electricity North West maintains the local network. Households who rely on power for medical or other needs may be eligible for the Priority Services Register, so ask your supplier or network operator.
SP Electricity North West looks after the cables and substations serving the city. See its live power cut map for current faults and restoration estimates where available, or call 105 (free) to report one. Unplug sensitive equipment, keep fridge and freezer doors shut, and never use a camping stove or barbecue indoors.
If it is only your home, look at the consumer unit. A trip switch that has flipped down points to a fault on your own circuits, and a qualified electrician is the person to call if it will not reset. In a block of flats, check whether the corridor and stairwell lights are out as well.
Manchester runs on dense, power-hungry sites: the labs and clinics of the Oxford Road Corridor, the tenants of Manchester Science Park and the offices of Spinningfields. Trading floors, servers and cold storage have no tolerance for a gap in supply. Lost power stops computers, lighting, security systems and refrigeration, and staff may be unable to trade or work safely until it returns. We provide 24/7 emergency generator hire when an outage has already hit, standby generators for sites that cannot risk a gap, and generator servicing and maintenance to keep installed units ready. Our team can supply and fit standby power through generator hire in Manchester, and the Manchester service page covers sales and maintenance too.
