Ireland Power Cut Checker
Use this page to see if there is currently a power cut in Ireland.
Power cuts in Ireland are handled by NIE Networks in Northern Ireland and ESB Networks in the Republic. Use the right live map for your side of the border. Business affected? We can help with an emergency generator 24/7.
The island has two separate operators. In Northern Ireland, check NIE Networks PowerCheck or call NIE Networks on 03457 643 643. In the Republic of Ireland, check ESB Networks PowerCheck. Keep freezer doors shut, unplug sensitive equipment and stay away from fallen lines.
Before you search either map, check your own fuse board for a tripped switch and look out of the window to see whether neighbours are dark too. North of the border, PowerCheck lets you search by postcode. In the Republic, ESB Networks PowerCheck only shows outages affecting more than ten properties, so a fault on a single house may not appear there.
Through a long cut, keep the family in one warm room and use torches rather than candles. Leave the freezer closed, switch off cookers and heaters so nothing restarts unattended, and check on neighbours who live alone.
Dublin Docklands and the International Financial Services Centre, Cork Harbour’s Ringaskiddy container terminal and the Belfast Harbour Estate each concentrate heavy electricity demand. Belfast Harbour alone is home to more than 700 firms. Offices, warehouses and harbour businesses all face the same risk in a cut: systems down, shipments delayed and staff unable to work. We offer 24/7 emergency generator hire, along with standby generators and regular servicing for sites that want backup in place. Before you call, list the essential loads, from refrigeration to IT, so we can match a generator to them. If an outage threatens a site, read how to keep your business running and call us on 0115 9444 422.
Live outages for the island are published by the two operators: use NIE Networks PowerCheck in Northern Ireland or ESB Networks PowerCheck in the Republic, both linked above.
Storm Éowyn struck on 24 January 2025 and left around 768,000 ESB Networks customers without power at its peak. North of the border, outages affected some 285,000 NIE Networks customers. ESB reported all affected customers restored by 12 February 2025. Households that are older or rely on medical equipment may be eligible for each operator’s priority register.
